On a dark, rain-soaked night in Taipei, an old movie palace prepares for its final screening: King Hu’s Dragon Inn. As the film flickers across the screen, Shiang-chyi Chen is one of the theater’s remaining workers, moving through nearly empty corridors while a handful of patrons linger in the auditorium. Kiyonobu Mitamura appears among that sparse audience, part of a crowd drawn as much by memory and desire as by the movie itself. Tsai Ming-liang keeps close to the staff, the moviegoers, and the cavernous building around them, where a closing night begins to take on a faintly ghostly air.
