A young Taipei office worker tries to build a future in a city changing around her, while her boyfriend remains tied to older loyalties and old dreams. Tsai Chin is Ah-chen, pushing toward a career in property development and a possible life abroad; Lung (Hou Hsiao-hsien), once a promising baseball player, drifts through his family’s textile business and spends his savings helping her troubled father. As marriage, money, and emigration hover in the background, the film follows a couple who have known each other since childhood and now find themselves moving toward different versions of Taipei.
