Ju Dou

The story

Sold into marriage with an older dye-mill owner who abuses her for being childless, Ju Dou begins a secret relationship with his nephew Tianqing, and the affair quickly turns into a dangerous deception. Gong Li is Ju Dou, trapped in a household where punishment and surveillance shape daily life, while Tianqing (Zhang Yi) becomes both accomplice and escape. In the early-20th-century Chinese countryside, co-director Zhang Yimou frames the story around the mill’s saturated reds and golds, using the confined domestic setting to sharpen the tension between desire, shame, and the need to keep a family secret hidden.
