A runaway heiress slips away from her father and ends up stranded on the road with the reporter chasing her story. Claudette Colbert is Ellie Andrews, a sheltered socialite trying to travel on her own; Peter Warne (Clark Gable) is the sharp-tongued newspaper man who offers help in exchange for an exclusive. After their bus leaves them behind, the pair are forced into a cross-country scramble of roadside cabins, hitchhiking, and constant sparring.
