An inflamed eye sends the Devil looking for a cure, and in Ingmar Bergman’s fantasy comedy he decides only one thing will do: a young woman’s purity must be spoiled before her wedding. Stig Järrel’s Satan dispatches Don Juan to Earth, where Jarl Kulle is the famed seducer charged with winning over a pastor’s daughter, Britt-Marie (Bibi Andersson). What begins as a mission from Hell turns complicated when Don Juan, a practiced libertine for centuries, finds himself caught off guard by love. Bergman turns temptation, virtue, and bourgeois respectability into a witty Swedish tale of courtship and interference from below.
