On the remote Shetland Islands, a murder rarely stays private for long. Each case pulls DI Jimmy Pérez, played by Douglas Henshall, into a small community where everyone knows each other and old grudges, family ties, and local secrets shape what people will say. As bodies turn up and missing people, buried histories, and fragile alibis come under scrutiny, the investigations spread from crofts and fishing boats to isolated cliffs and tight-knit villages. Later, DI Ruth Calder, played by Ashley Jensen, returns to the islands to take on crimes that unsettle the community and force suspects, witnesses, and police alike to confront what has been hidden in plain sight.
