Bitter Rice

CrimeDrama109 min

Fleeing the police in Northern Italy, Francesca hides among seasonal rice workers in the Po Valley, where her partner Walter soon draws her back into a web of theft, jealousy, and violence. Doris Dowling is Francesca, a small-time criminal trying to disappear in the fields, while Silvana Mangano’s Silvana is a local worker whose presence shifts the balance between the fugitives and the laborers around them. Vittorio Gassman’s Walter follows Francesca into the camps, and with Marco, a soldier nearing discharge, the four become tangled in a plan that turns the rice harvest into the backdrop for robbery, desire, and murder.
