Journey to Italy
DramaRomance85 min
Ingrid Bergman is Katherine Joyce, an English woman traveling through Italy with her husband, Alex. George Sanders’s Alex keeps a cool distance as old resentments and long silences begin to crowd in on their marriage. As they move through Naples and the surrounding countryside, visits to museums, ruins, and Pompeii shift the trip away from sightseeing and toward a closer confrontation with the life they share. Roberto Rossellini keeps the focus on the couple’s uneasy rhythms, using the places around them to mirror a relationship that seems to be coming apart.
