The Tales of Hoffmann
ComedyFantasyMusicalRomance133 min
A melancholy poet revisits three women he loved and lost: a mechanical performing doll, a Venetian courtesan, and the ailing daughter of a celebrated composer. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger turn Offenbach’s opera into a film of dance, painted sets, and saturated Technicolor imagery, with the emotions and story carried through music. Moira Shearer and Ludmilla Tcherina are among the faces in those recollections, while Robert Helpmann moves through the poet’s shifting dream-world of romance, performance, and illusion.
