When a high-school girl is rescued from one predatory encounter, she falls into another kind of danger. Miyuki Kuwano's Makoto is drawn to Kiyoshi, a restless student whose swagger soon turns coercive; Yûsuke Kawazu gives him a hard, volatile presence as he turns her gift for hitchhiking into a racket aimed at middle-class men. In 1960 Japan, their romance and petty crime move through roadside pickups, cheap rooms, and youth hangouts, with sex, money, and social resentment tangled together.
