Profound Desires of the Gods
Drama173 min
A Tokyo engineer arrives on a drought-hit tropical island to drill a well for a sugar mill, only to find himself drawn into the life of the Futori clan. Kariya is an outsider from the mainland, and his practical assignment keeps colliding with an insular family and the customs that shape the island around them. Rentaro Mikuni and Hideko Okiyama are among the ensemble in this 1968 Japanese drama, which keeps its focus on the friction between modern development and a community bound to its own rhythms, beliefs, and blood ties.
