A New Leaf

ComedyRomance102 min

Henry Graham has spent through his fortune, and his solution is as cold-blooded as it is absurd: marry money, then get rid of the wife. Walter Matthau is Henry, a pampered playboy who fixes on Elaine May’s Henrietta Lowell, a shy, independently wealthy botanist whose absent-minded sweetness makes her seem like an easy target. As Henry blunders through courtship, legal scheming, and a string of increasingly messy accidents, the film turns a marriage plot into something dry and dark, with May’s awkward timing and Matthau’s exasperated vanity pushing the comedy toward black farce.
