In Paris, conservatory student Ariane trails her private-eye father into the orbit of Frank Flannagan, an American millionaire whose affairs keep landing on her father's desk. Audrey Hepburn is Ariane, a sheltered young woman who decides to approach Frank on his own polished terms; Gary Cooper's Frank, used to brief romances and luxury hotels, is caught off guard by someone he can't quite read. Maurice Chevalier appears as Ariane's detective father, watching the whole arrangement from uncomfortably close range. Billy Wilder surrounds the flirtation with Ritz-hotel glamour, farce, and the uneasy gap between innocence and experience.
