Irma la Douce

ComedyRomance135 min

After an honest Paris policeman is fired, Nestor drifts into the orbit of Irma, a popular prostitute whose life runs on pimps, police raids, and streetwise bargains. Jack Lemmon is Nestor, and Shirley MacLaine’s Irma becomes the focus of his increasingly tangled devotion. Unable to accept her seeing other men, he invents a wealthy British alter ego and tries to make himself her only customer. Billy Wilder builds the romance around disguise, jealousy, and a carefully maintained double life, with Paris rendered as a heightened world of crowded streets, café tables, and constant near-misses.
