Allen Bauer is a successful Manhattan businessman whose life changes when a mysterious young woman saves him at sea and then reappears in New York. Tom Hanks is Allen, caught off guard by how quickly he falls for Madison (Daryl Hannah), a beautiful stranger who seems as drawn to him as she is baffled by ordinary human life. The complication, hidden from Allen, is that Madison is a mermaid. Ron Howard directs the story as modern-city romance collides with fairy-tale logic, with John Candy and Eugene Levy rounding out the chaos around Allen and Madison.
