After his wife is killed in a car accident, investment banker Davis (Jake Gyllenhaal) starts coming apart in ways that unsettle everyone around him. A complaint about a hospital vending machine turns into a stream of confessional letters, and those letters reach Karen, a customer-service rep and single mother with Naomi Watts in the role. As Davis begins dismantling the routines and relationships that once defined him, his unlikely connection with Karen and her teenage son pulls his private grief into the open, mixing sharp, offbeat humor with the messier parts of loss.
