The Strawberry Blonde

ComedyRomance99 min

Turn-of-the-century Brooklyn dentist Biff Grimes is still hung up on Virginia, the neighborhood beauty who chooses his swaggering friend Hugo instead and leaves Biff pulled into Hugo’s shady dealings. James Cagney is Biff, carrying the grudge from barbershops to beer gardens, while Olivia de Havilland’s Amy enters his life through a hasty, half-spiteful marriage. Rita Hayworth is the strawberry blonde at the center of Biff’s long rivalry with Hugo. Around 1900 New York, the film follows old crushes, bruised pride, and the mess Biff makes trying to measure his life against somebody else’s.
