Gold Diggers of 1933

ComedyDramaMusical97 min

When Broadway goes dark during the Great Depression, three broke chorus girls cook up a plan to pry money from a wealthy, deeply unpleasant society man and keep their show alive. Joan Blondell heads the scheming trio beside Aline MacMahon and Ruby Keeler, while Dick Powell and Warren William move through the tangle of rehearsals, romance, and mistaken identity around the production. Made in Hollywood’s pre-Code years, the film mixes backstage hustle with Depression-era money worries, and its musical numbers were staged by Busby Berkeley, from intimate rehearsal scenes to the oversized spectacles that crowd the stage.
