When a repeat shoplifter is headed for a lonely Christmas in jail, the assistant district attorney prosecuting her offers to drive her home instead. Barbara Stanwyck is the defendant, sharp and guarded, while Fred MacMurray’s prosecutor finds his orderly holiday plans giving way to a road trip through the Midwest, with small-town stops, family visits, and Niagara Falls along the way. Christmas and New Year’s Eve turn their legal relationship into something more personal, even as the case that brought them together is still waiting back in court.
