Nine-year-old Masao slips away from Tokyo one summer to look for the mother he has never met, and the adult sent along with him is the last person for the job. Takeshi Kitano is Kikujiro, a loud, unreliable small-time crook who gambles away their travel money and drags the boy through a string of hitchhiked rides, roadside stops, and odd encounters. Yusuke Sekiguchi's Masao stays mostly quiet as the pair make their way across the Japanese countryside, relying on improvised schemes and the kindness of strangers to keep the search going.
