When three Soviet agents in Paris fail to bring home a composer who has gone soft on the West, Moscow sends Ninotchka to clean up the mess. Cyd Charisse is the severe envoy, arriving to retrieve both the artist and her wayward comrades, but Fred Astaire’s Steve Canfield, an American movie producer, starts to chip away at her rigid view of capitalism and pleasure. Reworking the story of Ninotchka as a musical, the film folds Cold War satire into Cole Porter songs, comic espionage, and a Paris backdrop where duty keeps colliding with champagne, nightlife, and attraction.
