After another failed scheme, Jean-Paul Belmondo is Alexandre Dupré, an international con artist bound for Venice with a new swindle in mind: selling a forged painting to a group of Japanese businessmen. Mid-flight, a stranger asks him to watch a briefcase until they land. When the man is shot soon after, Alexandre is pulled into a chase involving enemy agents, a missing case, and a plan that has suddenly become much bigger than his original scam. Carla Romanelli appears among the shifting allies and adversaries around him as the story moves between jet-set caper and criminal farce.
