Joseph Cotten is Holly Martins, a broke American writer who arrives in postwar Vienna expecting a job from his old friend Harry Lime and instead walks into news of Lime’s death. Convinced the story doesn’t add up, Holly begins looking into reports of a mysterious “third man,” drawing the attention of British officer Major Calloway (Trevor Howard) and falling for Lime’s lover, Anna (Alida Valli). The search winds through bombed streets, cafés, occupied checkpoints, and the city’s black-market underworld, with Harry Lime’s absence hanging over every conversation.
