A former private detective has remade himself as a small-town gas station owner, hoping the past has finally lost his trail. It catches up anyway when a gambler’s henchman arrives with a message: Jeff must return to the life he left behind. As he tells his girlfriend what really happened, the story loops back to an earlier job involving a runaway woman, missing money, and a romance that pulled him across the line he was supposed to hold. Robert Mitchum anchors Jeff’s weary retreat, while Jane Greer’s Kathie draws him into a trap where every attempt to start over only tightens the net.
