As Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette flee toward Varennes, another coach rolls through revolutionary France carrying a stranger, more talkative set of passengers chasing the royal party. Among them are Restif de la Bretonne, Giacomo Casanova, Thomas Paine and Sophie de la Borde, thrown together for a night of conversation, debate and uneasy class encounters. Jean-Louis Barrault, Marcello Mastroianni, Hanna Schygulla and Harvey Keitel are part of the traveling company, as the road to Varennes becomes a cross-section of a country shifting under its old order.
