Le Plaisir

ComedyDramaRomance97 min

Three interlocking stories trace different forms of pleasure in late-19th-century France: an aging man hides behind a mask so he can keep attending dances and pursuing younger women, Madame Tellier takes the women from her brothel to the countryside for her niece’s communion, and a painter falls for his model. Danielle Darrieux joins a large ensemble that also includes Jean Gabin, as the film moves through crowded ballrooms, country streets, urban bordellos, and studio interiors. The episodes share a light, worldly surface while circling vanity, desire, and the costs that come with both.
