The Big Sleep
CrimeDramaMysteryThriller116 min
Private investigator Philip Marlowe takes what looks like a straightforward blackmail job from the wealthy Sternwood family and quickly finds himself threading through Los Angeles gambling dens, bookstores, missing persons, and murder. Humphrey Bogart is Marlowe, dry-eyed and hard to rattle, while Lauren Bacall’s Vivian Rutledge meets him with cool skepticism and a sharp line of her own. Directed by Howard Hawks, the case keeps widening around the Sternwoods’ two daughters as blackmail, debt, and deception pull Marlowe deeper into a web he can’t quite map from the start.
