After entering the ministry to atone for accidentally bombing a German orphanage in World War II, Dean Hess returns to the Air Force at the start of the Korean War to train South Korean pilots. Rock Hudson is Hess, carrying his guilt onto a new battlefield until he notices children scavenging the base for food. With the help of a local teacher (Anna Kashfi), he starts gathering the orphans into a makeshift refuge, balancing his duties as an officer with a mounting responsibility to the children around him.
