During World War II in India, an American lieutenant kills a British sergeant at a remote jungle outpost, and Lt. Colonel Barney Adams is assigned to defend him at court-martial. Robert Mitchum is Adams, a steady officer walking into a case that quickly stops looking straightforward. As he tries to piece together what happened, access to evidence is blocked and key witnesses begin disappearing. With British and American authority both hanging over the proceedings, the murder trial opens onto military secrecy, competing loyalties, and the sense that the accused man may be only one part of a much larger arrangement.
