Earl Pilcher Jr. runs an equipment rental business in rural Arkansas, living with his wife, children, and parents, until his mother’s final letter upends the story he’s been told about himself. Robert Duvall is Earl, who learns he was born to a Black woman who died in childbirth and that he has a half brother in Chicago. When he makes the trip north, James Earl Jones’s Ray meets him with suspicion, and Ray’s son Virgil is no warmer. The person determined to force the family into the same room is Aunt T., the blind elder who insists Earl be acknowledged.
