As Allied forces push north through Italy during the final stretch of World War II, six connected stories trace encounters between American soldiers and Italian civilians from Sicily to the Po Valley. Roberto Rossellini follows the campaign over eighteen months, moving from ruined villages and city streets to makeshift front-line crossings as people try to navigate occupation, retreat, and the gaps between languages. Among the ensemble are Carmela Sazio and Robert Van Loon, part of a cast that mixes familiar actors with everyday faces. The result stays close to the uncertainty and awkward intimacy of wartime contact.
