In postwar Germany, a displaced Czech boy separated from his family drifts through refugee camps and ruined streets while his mother searches for him. Montgomery Clift is the American GI who takes the child in, offering food, shelter, and a brief sense of safety; Ivan Jandl is the frightened boy at the center of the story. As relief workers and military officials sort through the aftermath of the war, the film moves through the wreckage of cities like Nuremberg, keeping its focus on a child survivor and a mother trying to find him before he disappears into the chaos.
