In Verona, the feud between the Montagues and Capulets turns the city volatile just as Romeo and Juliet meet at a Capulet masque and fall in love. Leonard Whiting is Romeo, the young heir to one house, while Olivia Hussey's Juliet belongs to the other, and their romance quickly becomes a secret. Franco Zeffirelli's adaptation keeps Shakespeare's language but grounds it in crowded streets, candlelit halls, and the public clashes of two powerful families. John McEnery and Michael York appear among the kinsmen and friends surrounding the couple as the conflict spreads through the city.
