Marcello Mastroianni is Guido Anselmi, an acclaimed Italian film director whose new production stalls just as his career seems to be peaking. Sent to a luxury spa to rest, Guido finds little escape: his producer, crew, actors, and the women closest to him all converge, each demanding that he move the film forward. His wife Luisa (Anouk Aimée) and mistress Carla (Sandra Milo) are part of the pressure surrounding him, as private turmoil bleeds into professional paralysis. Federico Fellini turns Guido’s retreat into a shifting stream of memory, childhood recollection, fantasy, and backstage chaos.
