Life Itself

Documentary121 min

Roger Ebert, the Chicago Sun-Times critic who became America’s most recognizable movie reviewer, is traced from his early newspaper days through TV fame, his contentious partnership with Gene Siskel, and the years when cancer reshaped his life. Drawing on Ebert’s own writing and public presence, the film moves through his bachelor years, Pulitzer-winning rise, and late marriage to Chaz Ebert, whose perspective brings their private life into view. Martin Scorsese and Werner Herzog are among the filmmakers and friends who place Ebert within a larger conversation about movies, criticism, celebrity, and the voice he kept after he could no longer physically speak.
