After an oppressive asylum’s patients are denied an excursion, they stage a coup and turn the institution against itself. In Werner Herzog’s 1970 German-language film, Helmut Döring and Gisela Hertwig are among the inmates driving the revolt, as punishments, taunts, and small acts of sabotage give way to wider disorder. The setting is a bleak, closed-off institution, but the action unfolds with Herzog’s absurdist bent, pushing the mutiny into stranger and more unsettling territory than a straightforward prison-break story.
