Trans-Europ-Express
ComedyCrimeDramaMysteryThriller105 min
Riding the Trans-Europ-Express from Paris to Antwerp, a producer, a director, and an assistant begin hashing out a crime story, and the film keeps slipping between their conversation and the scenes they imagine. Jean-Louis Trintignant is Elias, a novice cocaine smuggler whose role changes as the script around him changes; opposite him, Marie-France Pisier’s Eva arrives as a prostitute and possible rival. As the train rolls on, the line between the filmmakers’ outline and the movie in their heads grows unstable, turning a smuggling plot into a sly, self-aware maze of false leads, erotic intrigue, and noir detours.
