After a classmate’s abrupt suicide, withdrawn teenager Lain Iwakura logs on to the Wired, a networked realm where messages from the dead, fractured memories, and other people’s minds seem to overlap. As Lain drifts further from suburban Japan’s everyday routines, the boundary between her offline life and the Wired grows harder to pin down. Kaori Shimizu gives Lain a hushed center, while Bridget Hoffman is among the voices surrounding her increasingly unstable world. The series folds school life, early-internet paranoia, and cyberpunk mystery into a story where identity and consciousness keep slipping out of focus.
