The Boom
Comedy97 min
In postwar Italy’s economic boom, Giovanni keeps spending money he doesn’t have to give his wife the luxury and respectability she wants, until debt leaves him facing a desperate solution: sell one of his eyes for cash. Alberto Sordi is Giovanni, a businessman whose confidence starts to crack as the operation draws near. Beside him, Gianna Maria Canale is the wife at the center of his scramble for status. Directed by Vittorio De Sica, the film turns social climbing, marital strain, and the rush to get rich into a black-and-white commedia all’italiana.
