After losing his submarine to a Japanese destroyer in the Pacific during World War II, commander Rich Richardson gets a second command—and turns it into a hunt for the ship that sank him. Clark Gable is Richardson, back at sea after a year behind a desk and driving the USS Nerka toward a personal vendetta that alarms his own men. Burt Lancaster is among the officers forced to carry out those orders as resentment builds inside the boat, where every silent approach, depth charge, and split-second decision puts the crew in the path of their captain’s obsession.
