During World War II, British engineer Barnes Wallis searches for a weapon capable of breaking the German dams that power the Ruhr industrial complex, while the RAF prepares the men who would have to carry it into Nazi Germany. Michael Redgrave is Wallis, pushing his “bouncing bomb” from theory to test flights; Richard Todd’s Guy Gibson commands the newly formed 617 Squadron for the raid itself. The film follows both the invention and Operation Chastise, moving from workshops and briefing rooms to low-altitude night flying over heavily defended targets.
