In Rome in 1938, while the city empties out to celebrate Adolf Hitler’s visit to Benito Mussolini, a worn-down housewife stays behind in her apartment building and meets the quiet neighbor who has also avoided the day’s spectacle. Over the course of a few hours, their chance encounter turns into an intimate conversation between two people hemmed in by the rules around them. As she speaks about her marriage, her duties, and the life expected of her, he reveals his own isolation and the danger he faces under the regime. Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni carry a private connection that unfolds against the public pageantry of fascist Italy.
