La Notte

DramaRomance122 min

Over the course of a day and night in Milan, a successful novelist and his wife move from a hospital visit into the city's wealthy social circles as infidelity and distance wear down their marriage. Marcello Mastroianni is Giovanni, polished on the surface and increasingly adrift, while Jeanne Moreau's Lidia watches him with a growing detachment of her own. Monica Vitti enters as the daughter of an industrialist, adding another current to the couple's long evening. Michelangelo Antonioni tracks them through modern interiors, crowded parties, and uneasy silences as the relationship keeps slipping further out of reach.
