The Conformist

Drama113 min

Jean-Louis Trintignant is a mid-level Fascist functionary in 1930s Italy, a weak-willed man ordered to go to Paris and help arrange the assassination of his former professor, now an anti-Fascist dissident. The trip doubles as a honeymoon, with Stefania Sandrelli beside him as his new wife, but the assignment grows more tangled when he becomes drawn into the exile's circle, especially the professor's wife (Dominique Sanda). Public loyalty and private unease move side by side as he tries to disappear into the rigid order he has chosen.
