Winter Light
Drama81 min
In a small rural Swedish church, Pastor Tomas Ericsson (Gunnar Björnstrand) carries out his duties while his faith drains away. Ingrid Thulin’s Märta is one of the few people still trying to reach him, while Jonas Persson (Max von Sydow), a fisherman overwhelmed by fear of nuclear war, comes to him for comfort. Faced with a parishioner in crisis and a woman he cannot answer with tenderness, Tomas discovers that prayer, ritual, and the words of his office no longer offer certainty. Ingmar Bergman keeps the focus on a winter service, a sparse parish, and the silence around a man losing his belief.
