A young nurse is assigned to care for a famous actress who has suddenly stopped speaking, and the relationship between them grows stranger the longer they remain alone together. Bibi Andersson is Alma, talkative and increasingly exposed as she tends to Elisabeth Vogler, with Liv Ullmann giving the actress a watchful, unreadable stillness. Ingmar Bergman moves the pair from clinic to a remote island cottage, where Alma’s confessions pile up against Elisabeth’s silence and the boundary between patient and caretaker begins to blur.
