A poor, educated orphan heads to Bombay to make his fortune and is almost immediately robbed of everything he owns. Raj Kapoor is the young drifter at the center, moving through pavements, pawnshops, and schemes as the city pulls him toward quick money. Nargis is the woman who takes him in when he has nowhere to go, giving the story a romantic thread as ambition and conscience start to collide.
