Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam
DramaMusical152 min
In late-19th-century Calcutta, a young man from the countryside is drawn into the decaying world of a zamindar household, where wealth, neglect, and excess shape everyday life. Guru Dutt is Bhoothnath, the outsider whose path crosses with Meena Kumari’s Chhoti Bahu, the lonely wife of a landlord more interested in drinking and pleasure than in his home. Through Bhoothnath’s eyes, the film moves through the rituals and ruins of the Bengali landed elite as Chhoti Bahu tries to hold on to her marriage by joining her husband in the habits that are pulling the house apart.
