In 12th-century Japan, the fugitive lord Yoshitsune and his six retainers disguise themselves as monks and attempt to bluff their way through an enemy checkpoint. Akira Kurosawa builds the drama around the dangerous ritual of inspection and performance, with Denjirô Ôkôchi and Susumu Fujita among the men forced to hold their nerve in full view of hostile guards. Drawn from a legend long staged in Noh and kabuki, the film keeps its focus tight on the crossing itself, where every gesture, chant, and hesitation could give the party away.
