On the road to Mount Fuji in the Edo period, a samurai and his two servants — including spear-carrier Genpachi — travel through a stream of chance encounters that slowly darken the journey. Along the way they cross paths with a policeman hunting a thief, a small child, and a woman being taken to be sold into prostitution, folding comedy, routine, and sudden cruelty into the same procession. Chiezo Kataoka and Ryunosuke Tsukigata head a large ensemble, with the story moving from inns and roadside stops to the tensions inside the traveling party itself.
